Improving DNS

DNS or Domain Name System, a foundation of the Internet for the last 20 years, has room for improvement. Most people do not realise what are the possibilities, but the DNS software that we are using (via an ISP or corporate server) has not evolved much from the software written in the 1980s. Adding security features, performance improvements (we all want a faster Internet, even with broadband) and some smarts fixes to evolve the existing DNS without disturbing your devices, either a laptop or a smartphone.

DNS is what allows you to type in a web address and end up at a website. DNS is transparent and yet fundamental to the operation of the Internet. There are two sides to DNS: the authoritative side which give out answers and the recursive side that asks questions on your behalf and holds onto them in case you ask again. The more you understand about DNS, the more you begin to see and understand how a lot of spam, spyware and phishing websites abuses DNS to operate and collect your data or wreak havoc.

What is WARP+ ??

Technically speaking, WARP+ is a VPN. However, imagine trying to convince a non-technical friend that they should install an app that will slow down their Internet and drain their battery so they can be more secure. Good luck! Under the covers, by downloading and using the 1.1.1.1 App, if users decide to enable WARP+, instead of just DNS queries being secured and optimised, the entire Internet traffic is secured and optimised.

This doesn’t just apply to your web browser but to all apps running on your phone or laptop. Any unencrypted connections are encrypted automatically and by default, WARP+ respects end-to-end encryption and doesn’t require you to install a root certificate or give Cloudflare permission to see any encrypted internet traffic. What WARP+ is not?

WARP+ isn’t designed for the ultra-tech kind of guy who wants to specify what server his/her traffic will be routed through. There is only one button in the WARP interface: ON or OFF.

How much does it cost?

The basic version of WARP is included as an option with the 1.1.1.1 App totally free and you don’t need to provide any personal information, not even your name, phone number or email address, in order to use the 1.1.1.1 App with WARP. This makes financial sense since you can upgrade to the aforementioned WARP+ premium service for even faster performance and WE LOVE IT !!

How to implement WARP+ ?

When you browse websites, there are several points where your privacy can be compromised, such as by your ISP or the coffee shop providing your WiFi connection. First, you must visit https://www.cloudflare.com/ssl/encrypted-sni/ to test whether your DNS queries and answers are encrypted, whether your DNS resolver uses DNSSEC, which version of TLS is used to connect to the webpage and if your browser supports encrypted Server Name Indication or SNI. You will see the difference when using WARP+ and you must also visit https://1.1.1.1/help or https://cloudflare-dns.com/help/ to have a better understanding of which changes will be made.

Second and also very important, you must check your internet speed with https://speed.cloudflare.com/ to judge the final results. The best thing to do is to visit https://one.one.one.one/family/ where you will find further instuctions on how to setup 1.1.1.1 for Families, something that will add a layer of malware protection to your home WiFi, automatically blocking access to known malicious websites having two options: one that blocks only malware and another one that blocks both malware and adult content. You can install it by changing the IP address settings on your home Internet router.

After implementing DNS over HTTPS and checking https://1.1.1.1/help, you will see DNS over WARP = No, most certainly. That is not an issue since DNS over WARP is a plaintext DNS request inside the WARP Tunnel to the WARP Endpoint that you are connecting to and DNS over HTTPS is an encrypted DNS request outside the WARP Tunnel to the nearest 1.1.1.1 Endpoint. Both are fast, both are private and fully encrypted.

If the web traffic is encrypted with DNS over WARP, will it be more secure? Does the Wireguard protocol make things slower, even if not noticeable? Please note that DNS over HTTPS is widely supported being an excellent start to increase your online security. Both are very fast and one is not faster than the other to an extent that you could notice any performance degradation. DNS over HTTPS is more secure than any traditional DNS because it uses an encrypted connection. Using DNS over HTTPS means that your Internet Service Provider and anyone else will not be able to see certain aspects of the DNS lookup process because it will be encrypted.

DNS over HTTPS increases your privacy and security because it prevents eavesdropping and manipulation of DNS data from the very famous man-in-the-middle attacks by using the HTTPS protocol to encrypt the data between the DoH client and the DoH-based DNS resolver. We also use Strict SSL by CloudFlare to prevent these kind of attacks.
